# Doc Cards

In addition to tracking tasks, Codecks can also be used to manage game design documents and other reference material: Doc Cards are made specificaly for this.

### Creating Doc Cards

![Select this button to turn a Task Card into a Doc Card](https://manual.codecks.io/_astro/1%20Creating%20Doc%20Cards.D2x-UGeQ_Z1oQlKd.webp)

You can turn any Task Card into a Doc Cards by selecting the Doc icon on the bottom right side of an opened card (or use the [bulk action bar](https://manual.codecks.io/bulk-actions/) to convert multiple cards in one step). Doc Cards can be converted back into a Task Card at any point by selecting the same icon.

### Doc Cards features

![This is how a Doc Card looks like](https://manual.codecks.io/_astro/2%20Doc%20Cards%20features.DXY7KbDB_Bfw9B.webp)

This is what sets Doc Cards apart from regular Task Cards:

- No [workflow states](https://manual.codecks.io/workflow/): this prevents from accidentally setting document content to Done and having the card archived
- No [priority](https://manual.codecks.io/priority/) or [effort](https://manual.codecks.io/effort/)
- Word count always visible in the bottom right corner, both in mini and expanded card view
- Dedicated swimlane when ordering by Priority, Effort or Status

> **Documentation in Context**
>
> The 300-page GDD that's outdated before production starts is a familiar pain point. We prefer bite-sized design docs that live alongside the work.
>
> Doc cards can be created in your GDD decks, linked from task cards, moved around as priorities shift, and updated as you learn. Design information appears in context with the actual implementation work instead of living in a separate wiki that nobody maintains.
>
> You can still create comprehensive documents by linking multiple doc cards together, but each piece stays manageable and relevant.

### Making the most out of Doc Cards

![An example of a Doc Card including backlinks](https://manual.codecks.io/_astro/3%20Making%20the%20most%20out%20of%20Doc%20Cards.B3Z91ZBD_et3i0.webp)

In order to build wiki-like structures we recommend referencing other cards using $-links, which can be inserted by typing `$` or by copy’n’pasting the URL of another card (more about this in the [Text Editor](https://manual.codecks.io/text-editor/) entry on our Manual). This will add a backlink at the bottom of the card for faster navigation.

It's also possible to bundle up multiple Doc Cards under a [Hero Card](https://manual.codecks.io/hero-cards/). Hero Cards consisting only of Doc Cards get a dedicated Doc Hero Card look.
